Direct cremation is the same regulated process whether you pay $795 or $4,160. Here are the lowest published prices in the metro as of July 2026, from provider GPLs and the FCAGA price archive.

For contrast: the metro's premium chapels charge $3,140 to $4,160 for the same service. That's the spread our price list exists to expose.

What to verify before you book

  1. Is the crematory on-site or contracted? On-site (Sosebee, A.S. Turner, Davis-Struempf, Jones-Wynn) means a shorter chain of custody. Contracted is normal and fine — but ask who.
  2. What does the quoted price include? The FTC Funeral Rule requires an itemized GPL. Watch for add-ons: permits, death certificates, "alternative container," mileage beyond a radius, after-hours transfer.
  3. How old is the published price? Several metro GPLs in circulation date from 2015–2019. The number you find online may be a floor, not a quote.
  4. Timing. Budget providers sometimes run longer timelines (7–14 days). If you need ashes returned quickly, ask.

When cheap is the right call — and when it isn't

Direct cremation fits when the family plans its own memorial, when simplicity was the wish of the person who died, or when money genuinely matters. It fits less well when the family needs a viewing for closure, when religious tradition calls for specific rites, or when relatives are flying in and need a structured service — in those cases compare the cremation with service tier instead (from $2,495 in the metro; see the full 2026 price breakdown).
